Mr. Used Tire Collections Scheduled Springfield Governor Rod R. Blagojevich announces the state will team up with various county health departments and local governments to hold a record number of countywide used tire collections in 2004. The increased number of opportunities to collect used tires will help to eliminate environmental and health hazards and recycle and reuse the tires in a variety of products and for fuel. "Abandoned used tires can hide mosquitoes that help spread disease such as West Nile Virus, and also pose a fire hazard.

That's why it is important to offer even more used tire collections for citizens around the state," Governor Blagojevich said. In partnership with units of local government, primarily county health departments, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled 32 countywide used tire collections throughout the state this year. Belford has offered to place the sign and maintain the area around the sign. Two more locations are needed one at the North Route 1 entrance to the county and one at the West Hwy. 146 entrance to the county.

If there is a property owner who has a good location for a sign, please call one of the numbers listed below. Locations should be clearly visible to traffic and not block drivers' view. Contact one of the following committee members concerning the' placement of signs: Todd and Alene Carr 287- 2761; Regina Austin 285- 6677; Linda Jerrels 264-5854; Sue Mahoney 285-6621; Sue McMaster 287-3183; Dixie Dart 264-6036. See the advertisem*nt on the back page of the Independent for information on purchasing a sign. The Illinois EPA has been conducting countywide used tire collections since 1990.

Last year there were 15 collections in which nearly 4,000 citizens brought more than 300,000 used tires to the collections. The collections are paid for with funds generated from the tire user fee assessed on retail customers. Used tires that are collected from these events are into tire-derived fuel, which is burned for energy recovery, or they are recycled into various materials including, playground flooring, horse arena flooring, rubber landscape mulch, and crumb rubber for use on athletic fields, running tracks. They are also used in the manufacture of various rubber products for the automotive and home improvement industries.
