What is the rune of chaos? ›

A rune of chaos was a magical symbol representing chaos. There were at least nine runes of chaos. The runes of chaos were a key part of the operation of the dread artifact Thakorsil's Seat.

The Thurisaz rune is the third one of the Futhark alphabet and is often avoided and treated with caution by rune scholars because of its powerful energy. Thurisaz stands for chaos and power. Reconstructing its Ur-Germanic name, one encounters the meaning "thorn" or "giant".

Chaos Runes represent ideas and experiences. In a sense, these runes are shorthand for more complex phrases. A single rune could represent a mutation or even mark a place of significant pools of Dhar, Dark Magic.

Members can make them with the Runecraft skill at level 35 at the Chaos Altar, by having pure essence in the inventory and a chaos tiara equipped or a chaos talisman in the inventory, granting 8.5 experience per rune crafted. At level 74 Runecraft and above, two chaos runes are made per essence at the Chaos Altar.

A Chaos Weapon is almost always a Hand Weapon (Sword), but there's no reason it couldn't be an axe, mace, or hammer. Some are Great Weapons. The Dark Gods disdain cowardly weapons like bows or handguns and so never reward their Champions with them.

It can be purchased from TzHaar-Hur-Lek's Ore and Gem Store for 300,000 Tokkul (or 260,000 with any pair of Karamja gloves). A common method to obtain this Tokkul as an Ironman involves selling chaos runes to TzHaar-Mej-Roh's Rune Store; this requires 28,889 chaos runes or 14,445 death runes with Karamja gloves.

*Raidō "ride, journey" is the reconstructed Proto-Germanic name of the r- rune of the Elder Futhark ᚱ. The name is attested for the same rune in all three rune poems, Old Norwegian Ræið Icelandic Reið, Anglo-Saxon Rad, as well as for the corresponding letter of the Gothic alphabet 𐍂 r, called raida.
